SMEA15068U Surgical summer course: Introduction to surgery with hands-on simulation training

Volume 2017/2018
Education

Master of Science in Medicine

Content

he aim of the summer school is to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of the most common procedures in the field of general surgery and the surgical sub-specialties.

The surgical summer school offers an introduction to medical education and simulation in Copenhagen. The course includes theory, as well as hands-on, practical skill development. The students are taught to perform suturing, ultrasound, and endoscopy/bronchoscopy. In addition, the course covers laparoscopy with an initial day focused on theory, and a subsequent day dedicated to skill development with opportunities to practice surgery on pigs (both open and laparoscopic). During the course, students also receive teaching in communication with a focus on both patient-provider interactions and teamwork in the context of surgical care. The students are evaluated with pre- and post-tests.

An emphasis is placed on student participation, and several different innovative teaching methods are used in order to optimize learning and to prepare students for their role as a junior doctor.
