Content

The Summer Course in Global Health Challenges consists of two weeks of class based learning and one week e-learning. The course convenes students from a range of professional backgrounds to introduce them to the key concepts, determinants, opportunities and challenges in global public health. Through a mix of lectures, case studies, group work and workshops, this summer school explores, discusses and analyses many of the greatest challenges to current and future health. Gathering a truly international group of passionate students, the summer course aims to serve as a platform for learning, exchanging experiences and views, networking, and inspiration, thus empowering participants to become more effective health leaders, thinkers and change-agents.

Topics covered by the course may include the following: Health & Human Rights; Non-Communicable Diseases; Communicable Diseases; Public Health Demography; Social Determinants of Health; Access to Medicines; Health & Development; Technology, Innovation & Global Health; Disasters & Humanitarian Assistance; Economics & Global Health; Migration & Mental Health; Health Systems in a Global Context; and more.

Learning Outcome

  • The purpose of the course is to enable the students to:

  • Knowledge

  • Explain global health governance and its actors.

  • Explain global transition in disease burdens and its determinants

  • Demonstrate an understanding of global health challenges related to climate change, migration and trade policies.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of challenges to national and regional health services in responding to changes in disease burdens.

Skills

  • Explore, explain and analyse many of the greatest challenges to current and future health at global and regional level

  • Analyse dilemmas in priority setting in global health

  • Reflect upon the role of key global health stakeholders in shaping policies and programs targeting global health challenges.

Competences

  • Reflect upon and discuss policies and programs across sectors, disciplines, and cultures.

1-2 mandatory papers per topic will be provided through an online learning platform prior to the summer course and students are expected to have read these prior to the respective classes.

Students must have an adequate level of academic English that will enable them to read the provided literature, and partake in discussions and presentations.
Applicants, who are not students of the Master of Science in Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, must have completed at least undergraduate level training within a relevant academic field and must submit a letter of motivation to the course responsible for assessment.
The course is taught by international and Danish professionals and academics from a range of Universities, United Nations agencies and consultants with experience from Global Health. Teaching includes lectures, group sessions, student presentations, e-learning and excursions.
