SGLK20008U Global Health Case Challenge
MSc in Global Health - elective summer course
MSc in Public Health Science - elective summer course
The overall aim of the course is to strengthen university students’ competencies in proposing solutions to real-world global health related challenges through a combination of academic skills and interdisciplinary and innovative thinking. As a part of the course, the students collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to develop and present their solutions to a specific case question selected by an external public or private partner, which may change from year to year.
Previous case providers and cases include: Laerdal Global Health (improving maternal health in low-resource settings), Gehl (community resilience in times of COVID-19), Cities Changing Diabetes (bending the curve of obesity), Gehl (synergies in urban development), UNFPA (migrating women's sexual and reproductive health), WHO EU Office (antibiotic resistance), Red Cross (refugees in Europe).
Before the students meet on campus, they must have completed an approximately 20 hours online course element consisting of lectures and mandatory readings on methodological and analytical approaches and case specific topics. Furthermore students are required to perform individual and team assignments during the online course.
The on-campus element of the course includes five successive full working days in Copenhagen where the students work in teams to come up with solutions to be presented to a panel of examinators on the fifth day. This session will be followed-up with feedback by the examinators and other teams. By the end the examination panel will deliberate and announce the top-three winning teams. Underway, each team will also be given feedback from relevant resource persons. Social activities will be planned for the on-campus programme.
After the course, all students will hand in an individual reflection assignment (7 hours workload).
On completion of the course, students should be able to:
Knowledge:
Demonstrate knowledge about the complexities within global health innovation and the selected global health challenge such as equity, social justice, individual privileges, power dynamics and the post-colonial influence on global health.
Identify the various stakeholders involved in the selected global health challenge
Understand the principles of innovation, entrepreneurship and feasibility
Understand the principles of effective communication
Skills:
Identify, assess and integrate facts and data relevant to the case into the solution
Integrate considerations of the complexities within global health innovation and the selected global health challenge
Apply innovation and problem-solving methods
Co-create and communicate in a multidisciplinary and international context
Create a feasible solution
Pitch the ideas persuasively
Competencies:
Integrate multi-disciplinarity into the design of innovative solutions
Recognise and network with stakeholders from various sectors
Plan and develop interventions in a multidisciplinary team
Some preparatory resources will be made available in the online course room.
On the first day on campus the case question is revealed and the teams begin their case work. The following three days will be devoted to group work to develop solutions and presentations supported by one-on-one coaching sessions on pitching underway. Also resource persons will be available to give feedback to each team.
On the last day on-campus, the groups will pitch their solutions and receive feedback from a panel of examinators. Afterwards there will be a session where there will room for peer-to-peer comments and discussions as well as feedback from the examinators. Finally to complete the course each participant is requested to produce a short reflection report to be submitted no later than one week after the course that will release the credits subject to approval.
