This course is concerned with the increased use of technological means to enable patients and citizens at large to participate in the practices and politics of health and illness. We introduce students to a variety of participatory technologies and arrangements in contemporary healthcare settings in Denmark and beyond (i.e. self-monitoring/self-care devices; Patient-Reported Outcome; Online patient-experience networks; User-driven innovation; Public consultation and dialogue). The course provides students with knowledge of the theoretical and political foundations for the participatory turn in healthcare (i.e. Shared Care; New Public Management; User Innovation) and analytical tools to uncover the assumptions and social effects of such technologies on individual, health system and society.
After the course the student will be able to:
Knowledge
Explain the theoretical and political foundations of the participatory turn in healthcare;
Explain differences between specific technologies in terms of user-assumptions and social effects.
Skills
Apply analytical concepts in analysis of specific technologies;
Discuss social implications of technologies for the individual, healthcare system and society.
Competencies
Participate in theoretically and empirically informed discussions on patient participation and technological innovation in healthcare.

Criteria for exam assesment
To achieve the maximum grade of 12, the student must be able to:
