BRIDGE - Translational Excellence Programme

A two-year postdoctoral fellowship in translational medicine

Content

Understanding mechanisms behind and developing new treatment for major public health challenges such as infectious heart, liver, and lung diseases, diabetes, and cancer involve research moving from bench side to clinic. It can be a challenging process, and the BRIDGE Clinical Translational Medicine course will cover examples on how innovative people have successfully bridged the gap between basic and clinical research. The course introduces general topics and challenges in clinical translational research as well as relevant real-life examples.

Learning Outcome

On completion of the course, the participants should be able to:

Knowledge

  • Understanding translational studies using examples from clinical trials
  • Relate how thorough characterization (molecular, immunological, imaging) of the individual patient or patient’s samples may be used for direct selection of patient treatment/care
  • Discuss how biological experiments may lead to drug development
  • Describe how to bring a preclinical drug to phase 1, basic requirements

Skills

  • Integrate knowledge obtained from all other courses into translational clinical research
  • Critically evaluate preclinical data - from a clinical point of view
  • Implement research results in clinical practice
  • Solve unmet clinical needs/questions by designing the clinically relevant experiments

Competences

  • Integrate basic biology into clinical knowledge
  • Assess ethical considerations of how to implement new molecular tools and conduct studies with patients
  • Understand the central aspects of clinical translational medicine and be able to discuss and communicate these to other scientists, clinicians, and the public

Course literature is published on Absalon.
