MSc Programme in Human Nutrition

Content

The purpose of the project in practice is to provide the student with concrete experience in a professional context and better understanding of the job opportunities available.

With this Project in Practice, the student must demonstrate that the student can apply theory and methods learned in Human Nutrition in a company or organisational setting, seek and gather new (possibly cross-disciplinary) academic expertise needed for the project work, and reflect on acquired academic skills in relation to a professional career.

Learning Outcome

In general, the intended learning outcomes (ILOs) should reflect that the Project in Practice should take place in a working environment that will require learning about the company culture, infrastructure, work flows (knowledge). Futhermore they should reflect that the project work requires defining and executing a well-defined assignment with concrete deliverables to be achieved in 8 weeks (skills). Finally, they should describe how exchange of knowledge (co-supervision) will take place in the specific company or organizational setting (competences).

Specifically, there are the following requirements for the ILOs.

Knowledge:

  • To learn about the company or organization as a workplace and its organizational culture, including the use of digital tools and sustainability profiles and strategies.
  • To understand the business and social context in which Human Nutrition plays a role.
  • To acquire the specific professional knowledge that is necessary to carry out the project.
  • To be aware of the specific organizational placement and function of the project within the company.
  • If the project contract states that the student must follow a supplementary academic course, the student must also be able to demonstrate knowledge of the relevant topics.

Skills:

  • To apply theory and methods learned in the study programme in a concrete context in a company or organization.

Competences:

  • To collaborate and communicate with different professional groups in a company or organization.
  • To reflect on use of the education in the study programme in a professional context.
  • To appraise the use of digital tools in the specific company or organizational setting.
  • To reflect on how sustainability meets reality in a work environment.
  • To reflect on the learning achieved.

In addition, there will be ILOs that will be specific for the individual projects and therefore the student and supervisors jointly will need to decide and agree upon them when writing the contract where they should be spelled out. It is important that the ILOs are described as detailed as possible as they will form the basis for the evaluation of the project.

The student and supervisors jointly prepare a relevant syllabus.

Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree are recommended.
Methodology used will depend much on the specific projects but it is anticipated that there will be an element of self-study in most projects.
This course is reserved for students in the MSc Programme in Human Nutrition.

A Project in Practice in Human Nutrition is a mandatory course in the MSc study programme on Human Nutrition.

A Project in Practice in Human Nutrition will always give 15 ECTS credits, corresponding to a workload for the student of 412 hours. The contract for the project in practice must state how these hours are distributed between time at the company, supervision, writing the assignment, and preparation for the oral exam.

The supervisor should be from NEXS. Supervisors from other departments at the Faculty of Science, UCPH, needs to be approved by the course responsible for the Project in Practice in Human Nutrition. It is encouraged that there will be a formal co-supervisor from the involved company and that such a co-supervisor is being involved in the definition of ILOs and writing of the project description for the contract. There may also be more than one co-supervisor. As a suggestion the supervisors could meet before the project starts, half-way through the project, and 1-2 weeks before handing in the project report.
