NIGK17001U Current advances in Igneous Petrology and Geochemistry

Volume 2018/2019
Education

MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience

Content

Igneous petrological case stories, which present ongoing discussions of aspects of Earth evolution and recent developments in the perception of igneous processes in the continental and oceanic crust and upper mantle and mantle. Elemental and isotopic quantitative geochemical methods and their application to igneous petrological problems. The integration of field methods, petrography, and physical volcanology in igneous petrology.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

  • detailed knowledge of igneous petrological high-temperature processes;
  • detailed knowledge of selected current ideas on the formation of igneous rocks and complexes;
  • knowledge of the development of ideas related to the evolution of the crust-mantle system.

Skills:

  • extract volcanological data during field work;
  • model selected geochemical and physical processes in igneous petrology;
  • manipulate and evaluate geochemical data related to igneous petrological problems.

Competences:

  • interpret petrological processes based on field observations;
  • integrate field observations with petrographic and geochemical laboratory data;
  • demonstrate an understanding of deep earth and volcanological processes as integrated parts of Earth evolution.
