MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
The course integrates the disciplines geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, groundwater-surface interactions, and streamflow. Development of complex 3D geological models using GeoScene 3D geological modeling and visualization software. Uncertainty of geological models. Fundamentals of groundwater flow, flow pattern and groundwater – surface water interaction in relation to climate, topography, and geological composition. Application of GMS modeling software for simulating groundwater flow, streamlines, groundwater ages, groundwater-surface water interaction, streamflow, and flow budgets.
Knowledge:
Understand hydrological fluxes at catchment scale
Understand rainfall-runoff relationships
Understand how topography, climate, and geological settings are drivers for groundwater flow
Understand groundwater – surface water interaction
Develop geological models for use in groundwater flow and transport simulations
Develop and calibrate groundwater models
Analyze travel path lines and ground ages
Skills:
Use of state-of-the-art modelling and visualization software for development of quantitative 3-dimensional quantitative geological models for use in groundwater modelling at catchment scale
Use of state-of-the-art modelling and visualization software for development of 3-dimensional groundwater flow and transport models at catchment scale
Calibrate of groundwater models against measurments of groundwater levels and streamflow
Compute groundwater pathlines and groundwater ages
Compute groudwater-surface water interaction
Water resources investigations at catchment scale
Competences:
Read and comprehend international literature on water resources and related supporting disciplines
Digital competences through collection and critical assessment of on geology, hydrogeology, and hydrology
Develop geological models of relevance for groundwater modelling
Develop and calibrate groundwater models for analyzing groundwater flow problems
Analyze the impact of the geological settings on subsurface flow, flow lines, and groundwater-surface water interaction
Analyze and assess hydrology, water balance and water resources at catchment scale for sustainable water resources management
