NFYK13015U Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

Volume 2017/2018
Education

MSc Programme in Physics

MSc Programme in Nanoscience

Content

This course is an introduction to current experimental techniques to study magnetism in materials: magnetisation and susceptibility, Mössbauer spectroscopy, NMR, muon spin resonance, and neutron scattering. The physical basis of the techniques and typical data and examples are presented. The course contains one project, based upon laboratory work or analysis of data taken elsewhere.

Learning Outcome

Skills
The student should be able to

  • Describe the principles in a series of magnetic measurement techniques including magnetization, susceptibility, Mossbauer spectroscopy, NMR, muon spin ressonance, and neutron scattering
  • Describe the theoretical background for medical MR imaging
  • Explain the magnetic properties of selected materials, e.g. nanoparticles

Knowledge
The course gives an introduction to selected experimental techniques for studying magnetic materials, currently used by research groups in the Copenhagen area. The course will comprise the topics:

  • Bulk magnetic measurement techniques: magnetisation and susceptibility
  • Mossbauer spectroscopy
  • NMR, including MR imaging
  • Muon spin resonance
  • Magnetic neutron scattering.

Competences
This course will provide the students with a background for further experimental studies within this research field, e.g. further courses, or a M.Sc. project.
In addition, the student will learn how to connect theoretical models and experimental methods.

See Absalon for final course material. The following is an example of expected course litterature.
