NBIA09015U Principal Subject in Molecular Genetics 2
MSc Programme in Biochemistry
Second of three modules of project work on Molecular Genetics.
Students complete three modules of one subject-line by following
three blocks.
The course deals with research that is based on phenotype/genotype
relations in model organism and in humans, e.g. mutations
that confer disease. Recent topics have been genome stability,
cancer development, DNA replication and transcription regulation.
The colloquia are based on original research articles presented by
a student and followed by a discussion of the topic. The principal
subject in molecular genetics provides the student with a solid
base for doing molecular biology research with the inclusion of
powerful genetic methodologies.
Knowledge:
The student will have obtained knowledge of specific research areas
including different experimental and theoretical approaches.
Skills:
Based on original research literature, the student will be able to
explain, evaluate and critically analyse the results, the methods
used and the conclusions drawn and compare with other relevant
literature. In addition, they will be able to present and explain
the background literature for peers.
Competences:
In addition to the goals specified for module 1, the student will
be able to present the results of original research articles to
fellow students so that they understand the problems analysed and
the value and impact of the presented article and satisfactorily
answer questions from fellow students. The student will also be
able to deal with conflicting results and conclusions in scientific
literature and to search and find literature necessary for
understanding the background for problems and experiments in the
presented paper and explain these background questions to fellow
students.
The student will, with the completion of all three modules, be
capable of understanding the basis for specific conclusions in a
field and will therefore understand the consequences of technical
or experimental future developments when they
occur.

Please note that teaching will take place together with students following "NBIK20002U Principal Subject in Molecular Genetics" in block 1 and 2 (15 ECTS). As this course is 7,5 ECTS you can choose to take the course either in block 1 or block 2.

If the student has not fulfilled the requirements for presentation of at least two seminars, the student can present a seminar of 45 minutes in a subject decided by the teacher.
If the student has not fulfilled the requirements for active participation in at least 80% of the sessions, the student must take the course again next year.
