The covered areas include: Chromosome and chromatin dynamics; control of gene expression, transcription, translation and protein folding; epigenetics; cytoskeleton; intracellular compartments, intracellular vesicular traffic and protein sorting; membrane structures, membrane transport and electric properties; energy conversion and mitochondria; signal transduction and cell communication; apoptosis and autophagy; the cell cycle; normal and abnormal development; comparative cell biology

Learning Outcome

The purpose of this course is to bring students to have a broad understanding of the general principles in cell biology. The students will obtain a holistic view of a cell and realize connections between cellular processes at an advanced level. Thereby the course is a highly relevant basis for masters and PhD projects with cell biology content. In addition, the students will get to appreciate the complexity of life and evolution.

After the course the student should be able to: 
Knowledge:
Describe the genetic and structural elements and genetic mechanisms. Describe mechanisms involved in gene regulation in cells. Display overview of membrane structures, cellular compartments and transport of molecules between compartments. Describe principles in signaling and cellular communication. Describe cell division, cell cycle control, autophagy and programmed cell death.

Skills:
Analyze and evaluate scientific papers, which describe cellular processes of any kind. Apply knowledge on the molecular biology of cells in the planning of own experiments. Communicate know-how on the structure and molecular mechanisms of living cells.

Competences:
Apply knowledge on the structure of molecular mechanisms of cells to further analyze problems within genome and cell biology. This level allows for an easy start of masters and PhD projects with cell biology content.

Fundamental knowledge in cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry is essiential and highly recommended.
Lectures.

Article work: Groups of students read and discuss larger articles together with individual teachers. The articles are recently published in a high impact scientific journal, and have been selected by the teachers to cover the cell biology area.

Discussion in groups and presentation to plenum about the “holistic view of the cell”

Oral examination, 20 min. (no preparation)
Oral examination in curriculum aiming at testing the students general and detailed understanding.
Exam registration requirements

80% attendance during group discussions and work with the holistic view of the cell.
