JJUA55140U International Environmental Law
The course offers an introduction to International Environmental Law, where students will become acquainted with the main features of the international law of environmental protection and with specific areas of international environmental regulation and its implementation.
The course is divided into three parts.
The first part of the course is devoted to the history and evolution, concepts, sources, actors and principles of the international law of environmental protection.
The second part of the course delves into substantive regulation in international environmental legal frameworks for: a) oceans, seas and freshwater; b) the atmosphere (including air pollution, ozone depletion and climate change), and c) species, ecosystems and biodiversity.
The course’s third and final part deals with the issue of implementation of legal environmental regimes and the interaction with Human Rights and the participation of non-state actors in international environmental law.
- Present and explain the theoretical and practical features of international environmental law
- Identify and analyze complex problems within the international environmental law course on various relevant and professional approaches
- Argue in favour of professional solutions, make a critical weighing of the relevant arguments and make a reasoned choice in relation to theoretical and practical solutions
- Put into perspective the concrete problems of the course subject in a way that shows that she/he has a professional breadth of view in relation to and knowledge about international environmental law
- Communicate and formulate her/his knowledge and arguments professionally and linguistically correct and in a way that is structured and coherent

Required readings cover 375 pages (aprox).
