In this class we study the dynamic history and culture of Poland. We begin in the Middle Ages and Mieszko I’s baptism in 966, and move through Reformation and the Renaissance, the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth era, Enlightenment period, the Polish partitions, and the period from Polish independence in 1918 all the way through World War II and Communism until 1990. We read historical texts as well as literature, by for example Romanic poet’s Adam Mickiewicz’s and Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk. We watch canonical film by Academy Award Winners Andrzej Wajda, and Paweł Pawlikowski. We also look at art, and listen to music to illustrate life in these different periods

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

account for the basics of Polish history and culture history.
address how major historical and cultural events shaped contemporary Polish culture.
identify a broad range of Polish “texts” (literature, film, popular culture, etc.) based on their content and stylistic features and place them in their broader historical and cultural context.
critically approach primary cultural text as well as secondary material.
explain major trends and issues in Polish history and culture in speech and in writing.
formulate their own critical problems concerning Poland in speech and writing.
use basic methods of literary and cultural analysis such as close reading, explication, and comparison “close read” various media such as literature, film, and other visual arts.
place Poland in contemporary geo-political configurations of Europe and the world
improve their current writing and analytical skills through written assignments
