HNOK0004SU Summer Courses in Scandinavian Manuscript Studies: 1. Reading and Working with Manuscripts
The course Reading and Working with
Manuscripts provides the student with an introduction to
codicology and paleography in the form of lectures and workshops.
Gaining hands-on experience with real manuscripts from the
Arnamagnæan Collection, the student will learn how to handle,
describe and read medieval and early modern manuscripts from
Iceland and Scandinavia.
The workload amounts to a total of 210 hours, equalling 7.5
ECTS.
For PhD students credits are 5 ECTS.
This includes preparatory reading before the beginning of the
summer school. A list

recommended reading can be found here.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe a medieval or early modern manuscript book in terms of its codicological features
- Recognize and date various types of medieval and post-medieval scripts
- Read and transcribe texts found in primary manuscript sources
