Kursusindhold

SECTARIAN IDENTITY AND SECTARIANISM IN THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST

The course aims to train students to understand the nature of sectarian identity formation, sectarian relations and 'sectarianism' (in its various definitions) in the Middle East and particularly in relation to Sunni-Shia dynamics. While the course covers aspects of early Islamic history, its main focus will be on the modern era. In particular, students will be introduced to the varying social and political relevance and utility of sectarian identities across different time periods and different geopolitical contexts. The course will illustrate how, far more than just a doctrinal issue, sectarian dynamics are often mediated through secular and modern frames of reference such as class, nationalism, colonialism, state building and the nation-state. Ultimately the course aims to enable students to understand contemporary sectarian dynamics in relation to their broader historical and political contexts.
