HMGK03311U AMIS: Migration and Societies - Practices and Arenas
Advanced Migration Studies
This course examines the practices through which migration and societies shape each other and the arenas in which those processes play out. Drawing on empirical research and theoretical perspectives from across the humanities and social sciences, we explore processes of settlement and categorization, the politics of recognition and membership, and the contested uses of concepts like multiculturalism and integration. The course emphasizes active engagement with social realities beyond the classroom: students will plan and carry out an original field study on a topic related to the course themes involving hands-on data generation and analysis. This fieldwork forms the basis of a written take-home assignment, which constitutes the final assessment and may be completed individually or in groups of up to five students.
