In this course, we will learn some of the important topics pertaining to contemporary Korean society from regional and global perspectives. The topics will include lack of regional institutions in Northeast Asia, environmental degradation, measures of historical reconciliation, manifestations of memory, seuxal violence during armed conflict and refugee policies among others. This course is to help the students cultivate a deeper understanding of the South Korea-specific topics by considering other empirical cases to comprehend the particular as well as universal aspects of them. While most of the readings on comparative perspectives will be in English, readings on empirical Korean cases will be in Korean.
