Content

This course spans from the post-liberation period of the Korean Peninsula to present-day North and South Korea. The course introduces concepts related to modern Korea, such as globalization and compressed modernity. The course also adopts a transnational perspective and places the Korean Peninsula in a cross-regional framework.

Learning Outcome

 

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate:

 

Knowledge and understanding of

  • Key issues, debates, and social transformations in contemporary Korea
  • Cultural and political characteristics of modern Korea
  • The anchoring of modern Korea in its historical development
  • Perspectives on Korea’s relations with the outside world since 1945.

 

Skills in

  • Identify and navigate academic and methodological discussions
  • Strengthen intercultural understanding and analytical thinking
  • Communicate and reflect on modern Korean society. 

 

Competences to

  • Analyse complex socio-economic and political conditions in modern Korea
  • Apply interdisciplinary perspectives in the study of Korean conditions
  • Convey insights about modern Korea across media and target groups.

Group exam regulations: The exam can be taken individually or in groups. For assignments written in groups, the following applies: 2 students: 6–15 pages, 3 students: 8–20 pages
