Content

This course is an interdisciplinary exploration of Korean culture from ancient times up to the opening of Korea in the 19th century with special focus on selected topics.

 

Intended Learning Outcomes:

 

1. Students will build a robust knowledge fundament of Korean culture, including insights into multiple disciplines, including history, literature, film, historiography, geography, anthropology, sociology.

 

2. Students will be able to write an academic essay by applying the following skills:

 

- Identify an academic topic.

- Find, understand and reflect on academic sources.

 

-  Use digital resources and databases.

 

- Give and receive constructive feedback.

 

- Contribute to an academic discussion.

Academic targets

At the examination, the student can demonstrate:

 

Knowledge and understanding of

  • Korea’s geography and demography and key political, economic, social and cultural developments in relation to their historical context.

 

Skills in

  • Explaining and analysing stereotypical prejudices that colour attitudes towards Korea, such as eurocentrism.
  • Communicating at a basic scholarly level, particularly in relation to referencing sources and editing bibliographies based on author-date documentation (as in The Chicago Manual of Style)

 

Competencies in

  • Finding, structuring and critically evaluating information on a topic related to Koreas’s history and culture.

 

Syllabus

The examiner specifies a syllabus of 600 standard pages.

Teaching and working methods

Compulsory class instruction with active student participation.

Exam provisions

Form of exam:  Oral exam on optional subject with material, following approval of active class participation

Active class participation consists of:

75% attendance

One oral presentation in groups.

Scope: 30 minutes, including grading. No preparation time is given.

The material consists of a process assignment of 4–6 standard pages.

Assessment: Internal with multiple examiners assessed using the 7-point grading scale, in which the process assignment is weighted 2/3 and the oral exam 1/3, and both must be assessed as passed in order to pass the exam as a whole.

Active class participation must be approved by the lecturer.

Regulations for group exams:  This exam can only be taken individually. However, the material can be produced by groups (max. 3 students) with individual assessment. If the material is a group product, the contribution of each student must be identifiable. The introduction and conclusion can be jointly authored. Extent for group assignments: 8-10 pages (2 students) and 12-14 pages (3 students).

Exam language(s): Danish or English.

Make-up exams/resits and exam taken when active class participation is not approved:  Oral exam on optional subject with material, 30 min. The material consists of an assignment of 9-11 pages.
