The process of parody is influenced by various factors, e.g. the genre or the medium, political and cultural contexts of the production, the identity of the adaptor and motivation. Parodies show how stories evolve and mutate in order to adjust to new times and places. This course examines Korean fairy tales (e.g. The Woodcutter and the Nymph) and “classics” (e.g. Hong Kiltong, Kuunmong) in relation to their parodies (e.g. Abigail Harm; My Love from the Star). We will discuss the question why artists revisit past works in order to create something new. The goal of this course is to become familiar with several Korean works in English translation and to begin to think about the process of parody, to discuss and to write about it.
