HKAK03211U KL. ARK Classical Archaeology - Roman Villa Architecture. Origins and evolution from the hellenistic roots to the 2nd century AD
The master course (consisting of four hours weekly) treats the architecture and art of Roman luxury villas. Hellenistic roots, the relevance of basic text sources as well as depictions of villa architecture in Roman wall painting will be discussed. The main goal of the course will be to work out an understanding of specific concepts of art and architecture which constitute the whole of the Roman „Villascape“ comprising sculpture, wall painting and landscape design. Furthermore, focus on the relevance of the natural environment of the respective villa complexes shall open the discussion and lead to a reconsidering of conventional assessments based on general typologies. Detailed discussion of case studies will provide students also with basic knowledge of Roman building techniques and the organization of large construction sites.
