Content

The course provides an overview of key discussions, political movements and conflicts, laws and other societal issues concerning indigenous peoples, primarily in Mesoamerica, from the conquest to the present day. This applies in particular to issues related to the political, social and cultural conditions of Mesoamerican peoples.

Special emphasis will be placed on cultural affiliations and identity across the centuries in a postcolonial perspective, including race, ethnicity and language, gender, sexuality and nationality.

In addition, the course will touch on current issues regarding cultural heritage policy as well as the ethical implications of dealing with Mesoamerican cultures and languages.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate:

 

Knowledge and understanding of

• key political, social and cultural processes that have characterized Mesoamerica since the Spanish invasion

• linguistic and cultural encounters in Mesoamerica

• the most important institutions, organizations and other forums that have played a role for the Mesoamerican peoples, historically as well as currently.

 

Skills in

• dealing critically and analytically with selected issues in relation to thematic fields in the study of colonial and modern social and cultural conditions in Mesoamerica, including language and identity.

 

Competencies in

• Reading critically and analytically

• Working academically with general aspects of indigenous peoples' conditions, including representation and positions in colonial historical and contemporary contexts.

500-600 normal pages of chapters and articles compiled by the examiner, consisting of both basic textbook material and research literature, as well as individual texts of a more informative and institutional nature.

Class teaching, museum and/or organization visits, group work and possibly online presentations by researchers and other relevant partners from, for example, Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.
