HFMK03305U FM, Module 1: Organizational and institutional analysis - Lectures

Volume 2018/2019
Education

Master in Film and Media Studies, 2016-curriculum

Content

This course provides an overview of media organizations and institutions, with a focus on their ongoing digital transformation. The course covers national and global media industries and the growing tension between them. We also ask why pan-European media organizations do not exist in the European Union. We explore important new phenomena and concepts related to social media and digital industries, e.g., digital labor, and surveillance capitalism. Participants will be introduced into sociological and political economic theories of media institutions and organizations as well as theories of management. Several types of media organizations and institutions, ranging from public service to private commercial media, and from film, news, and broadcasting to social media, will be compared across different social and cultural contexts (within Europe and beyond). We also discuss how key media and communication policies and regulations affect media organizations. Finally, we examine the issue of environmental responsibility of media organizations, and if they could be made greener, i.e., more environmentally sustainable.
