The course concerns the normative political basis for societal organization. Classical theories in political philosophy and their foundations are scrutinized, focusing in particular on recent and contemporary such theories. Themes include justice, equality, freedom, democracy, power, community, feminism, conservatism, nationalism, pluralism, multiculturalism, identity politics and methodology in political philosophy.

In order to meet the requirement of active participation, which is a requirement for taking the standard exam, 7 out of 8 written assignments must be approved, including the two individual assignments (the rest of the assignments are group assignments). Also, for each of the individual assignments, students must receive oral feedback from a teacher in addition to written feedback.
