Content

This module is organised around four thematic clusters that trace developments in postcolonial writing (theoretical and literary) from its early phases in the 1950s-60s to contemporary times: nation and migration, recognition and misrecognition, the ambiguities of difference, transculturalism and the challenges of globalisation. These themes will be explored as part of an overall conversation about the complex legacy of humanism – humanism as Eurocentric and a European legacy but also the possibly utopian longing for a new humanism. What were the primary concerns in the formative years of postcolonialism, what happened to them and what new challenges are evident in the present moment? In connection with each thematic cluster, we will study a literary text from the postcolonial ‘canon’ in dialogue with a contemporary postcolonial text and relevant theory and criticism.

Authors studied will include Sam Selvon, Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, V.S. Naipaul, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Yvonne Uwuor, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Specific texts and course plan will be available autumn 2021.
