All texts are to be studied in the latest series of the Arden edition.

Shakespeare and the Natural World (Søs Haugaard)

This course proposes to take a fresh look at the representation of the relationship between man and the natural world in Shakespeare’s plays and poetry. 

Ecocritical approaches to Shakespearean drama have generated new readings of Shakespeare’s plays and produced a renewed critical interest not only in representations of the natural world in Shakespeare but also in Elizabethan and Jacobean religion and cosmology. It is on this background that we will be pursuing new discoveries in Shakespeare’s texts.

Course reading will include As You Like It, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, King Lear and Titus Andronicus as well as critical studies including: MacFaul, Tom. Shakespeare and the Natural World.
