HENK00062U CANCELED English - Free topic 2: Chaucer and the Invention of English as a Literary Language

Volume 2018/2019
Content

CANCELED

This course module looks at Chaucer as the creator of English as a literary language through two of his major works – Troilus and Criseyde and The Canterbury Tales – from a combination of both literary and linguistic angles. The linguistic component (to be taught by Jesper Kruse) will consist of an overview of Middle English phonology and grammar, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which Chaucer navigates between the two in his use of metre. The literary component (to be taught by Charles Lock) explores how a new ‘vernacular’ literature such as Chaucer’s could negotiate its position with regard to the languages and myths of the Classical world.
