Kursusindhold

This course explores speculative fiction focused on environmental crisis and artificial intelligence. It examines how contemporary fears—climate catastrophe, technological dependence, and social fragmentation—are imagined in novels, short stories, and films. We will treat “speculative fiction” as a key term, arguing that it better captures the genre’s engagement with present realities and possible futures than the narrower label “science fiction.” Students are therefore introduced to fiction written in English that is socially engaged with the big issues of modern society. Authors use the genre as a space for ethical debate, political critique, and environmental awareness. The course will also examine our ambivalent relationship with AI—both hopeful and fearful—by looking at representations of AI’s (non-)sentience as philosophical and social problems. The course will introduce students to critical and theoretical texts on crisis society and the philosophy of language, as these are essential for understanding the social and historical contexts of the fictional works.

• udtrykke sig spontant, flydende og præcist og skelne mellem finere betydningsnuancer, selv i mere komplekse situationer 
• interagere med et ekspertpublikum og bidrage med originale indsigter 
• tydeligt at kommunikere detaljerede forskelle mellem ideer, koncepter og begreber, der ligner hinanden meget.

Critical texts will include defining descriptions and analysis of Science Fiction as a genre, such as texts by Darko Suvin (theory of ‘cognitive estrangement’), Ursula K. Le Guin essays in The Language of the Night and Dancing at the Edge of the World), Fredric Jameson (analyses in Archaeologies of the Future), Brian Attebery (theoretical texts such as Strategies of Fantasy and Decoding Gender in Science Fiction)

H. G. Wells, The Time Machine – Environmental decay, and the long-term costs of a divided society

E. M. Forster, “The Machine Stops” – Society given over to machine control, anticipating digital overreliance and regulation by algorithm

Richard Matheson, I Am Legend – Pandemic, vaccine and medical experiments, and otherness

Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle – Reckless scientific innovation and doomsday technologies, including climate-style tipping points

Anna Kavan, Ice – A frozen, collapsing world reflecting psychological, political, and climatic instability

Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – What counts as human in an era of AI, extinction, and synthetic life

Octavia Butler, “Speech Sounds” – Post-pandemic breakdown of language, social trust, and civic order

Neal Stephenson, Snow Crash – A corporate-controlled metaverse, information viruses, and digital capitalism

Ted Chiang, Stories of Your Life and Others – Speculative thought experiments about language, prediction, and human agency in a data-driven world.

Holdundervisning samt eventuelt forelæsning. Fagelementet Engelsk valgfag 2 undervises sammen med fagelementet Mundtlig kommunikation på engelsk.

The oral communication component of this elective will train students to communicate complex ideas precisely, clearly, and fluently in academic spoken English. Students will read and discuss texts on effective presentation techniques and will practice these skills regularly through structured in-class speaking activities. Practice may include:
• Short analytical presentations in which students compare a passage from a fictional text with a critical text on the climate crisis or AI.
• Guided discussions and debate in small groups, where students must articulate and defend interpretations of key course texts.
• Workshop-style feedback sessions, where students deliver a brief mini-presentation, receive targeted feedback on clarity, structure, and delivery, and then immediately re-present a revised version.
• Work with media clips—for example, dialogue from film adaptations of the novels—to analyze and then rehearse oral commentary that links specific linguistic or phonetic features to the broader cultural and thematic issues in the course.
In this way, oral proficiency is developed not only through formal presentations, but also through iterative practice, peer interaction, and focused feedback.

We will also train in academic writing and register through time-limited in-class exercises, such as group work on formulations and drafts that will be uploaded to Padlet and discussed in a plenary forum.

Særlige bestemmelser:
Prøven i engelsk valgfag 2 og mundtlig kommunikation på engelsk gennemføres som parallelle prøver med særskilt bedømmelse.

Den mundtlige prøve tager udgangspunkt i materialet udarbejdet til engelsk valgfag 2, hvis de to dele tages i samme eksamenstermin (ordinær samt syge-/omprøve). Prøven kan inkludere yderligere perspektiver inden for det valgte emne.

Hvis fagelementet mundtlig kommunikation på engelsk tages uden tilknytning til fagelementet engelsk valgfag 2 aftales på forhånd et emne og et pensum mellem eksaminand og eksaminator.
