ASTK18117U Qualitative Inquiry and Engagement

Volume 2018/2019
Education

Bachelor student: 10 ECTS

Master student: 7.5 ECTS

Content

In addition to the conventional elements of qualitative methods courses (problem-definitions, research questions, field work, interviews, analysis, evidence etc.) this course will touch upon elements related to engagement in practical problems (building relations with stakeholders, making contracts, the role of values, the interaction between research and practice, the role of brokers, and the use of findings etc).

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

After the successful completion of this course, the students will have a sufficient level of knowledge of fundamental problems in qualitative methods. This knowledge will be grounded in literature.

Skills:

Students will have the skills to plan and carry out their own small-scale projects.

Competence:

Students will also have the competence to

- deal with elementary practical problems in qualitative research as well as to

- discuss the use of these methods in relation to real-life problems and thereby also

- critically appraise how qualitative methods are used by others in actual research.

App 1200 pages. Textbooks, articles and case materials dealing with qualitative methods and engagement.

Lectures, discussions and small exercise. Students will work in groups on projects where they either

a) collaboratively carry out their own small-scale research projects or
b) design a project proposal which explains how and why qualitative methods can be used in their master thesis project or
c) critically review an existing piece of work which uses qualitative methods in a significant or controversial way

Visiting professor Thomas Schwandt and Professor Peter Dahler-Larsen will teach 2-3 hour sessions every week in September. Students will work with their own projects through the semester. There will be a 4-hour feedback-session in early November.
