This course introduces population issues, concepts, theories and methods by encompassing the fields of sociology, demography, and economics. It provides an overview of various aspects of population dynamics in family and household structure, fertility, migration, aging, education, health and mortality, etc. This course also examines the relationship between population and development, and their potential consequences from sociological, economic and geographical perspectives. Within the courses we will also demonstrate thematic examples and tasks, including:
creating population pyramid. –It is the most intuitive way to show the age and gender composition of the population in a society;
descriptive maps of population. –It will show the distribution of the population via maps and demonstrate the spatial heterogeneity of population dynamics;
visualization of migration. –It shows how the population flow looks like and how migration shapes the age composition of the local population.
On successful completion of the course, the student is able to:
KNOWLEDGE:
- account for core knowledge and theories about population processes and their relationship with social development
- know how to interpret and calculate various demographic indicators
- have a knowledge of contemporary population issues across different societies
SKILLS:
- identify demographic dynamics underlying social phenomena
- search and make use of demographic data
- apply demographic theories to explain population dynamics in different societies
- perform basic demographic analysis to understand some social and demographic issues
COMPTETENCES:
- able to adopt demographic perspective to understanding social phenomena
- able to form a critical view about population policies in different societies able to identify challenges to social development based on the contemporary population dynamics in different societies

Student and teacher feedback will be built into the exercises. This will both take paces as peer feedback in smaller groups as well as presentations for class where the professor will give direct feedback.
