HMVK0431OU Musicology/Theater: Women, Performance, Music History
Musikvidenskab KA2008 ordning, BA2012 ordning, Teatervidenskab
This course will focus on gender and history in music from the 16th until the 19th century. In the late 16th century, the first professional female musicians appeared in Italy. Evolving in a masculine world, they were considered as erotic objects, both threatening and extremely fascinating. Fulfilling male aspirations, they were strongly criticized for their amorality and highly praised for their virtuosity. They had to find strategies to survive as artists and defend their professionalism. Singing, playing, and composing represent an act of transgression and empowerment. By drawing on interdisciplinary sources in music, history of medicine, sexuality and the body, we will try to understand how the transgression of these women working in an environment reserved to men was perceived and evolved during this period. Female composers, famous opera divas and female instrumentalist virtuosos (from Barbara Strozzi until Pauline Viardot) will serve as case studies. Testimonies and sources on these women are almost exclusively written by men and therefore reflect a masculine gaze. By reading between the lines of these male narratives, we will try to understand the lifes and challenges faced by these female musicians.
Kurset kan også tages af studerende fra Teater og performancestudier som frit emne.
