Content

The summer school will provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of the most common diseases and treatments within internal medicine. Invited speakers will share insights into the latest research and possible future developments and treatments. The focus will be on participation and dialogue, including different innovative educational methods intended to optimize learning outcome. The objective of the course is to provide a thorough understanding of both acute and non-acute conditions and thus make you more prepared for life as a junior doctor.

The summer school consist of two courses of each two weeks. The following topics are taught in course 2: 

Cardiology, neurology, oncology, respiratory diseases and infectious diseases.

Review articles from academic journals

International and Danish medical students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree or have completed a minimum of three years of medical studies.
The courses will combine lectures by invited speakers, interactive seminars and group work. The course is based on active student participation.
A social programme will be arranged, with activities mainly on Fridays.
All the teaching will be held in English.

Practical written examination, 9 hours
Mandatory elements: Active participation during the course and participation in a practical written examination in groups.

Students are awarded a certificate from the University of Copenhagen once they have passed the mandatory elements.

Criteria for exam assesment

To obtain the assessment passed the student must demonstrate the following abilities at a sufficient level:

Knowledge                                    

Cardiology

  • Explain acute conditions.
  • Explain pathophysiology, treatment and diagnostics in chronic heart failure and stable ischemic heart disease. 
     

Pulmonary and infectious medicine 

  • Explain major pulmonary disease and the relevant diagnostics.
  • Explain front line treatment in acute pulmonary disease.
  • Explan the basic treatment for chronic pulmonary disease.


Oncology

  • Explain the basic pathophysiology and risk factors for developing cancer including common symptoms and basic treatment focused on the most common cancer types.
     

Neurology

  • Acute neurological conditions and common symptoms of neurological disorders.
     

Skills

Cardiology

  • Recognize acute conditions.
  • Knowing when to refer patients for specialized treatment.
  • Knowing when to contact a cardiologist for specialized treatment.
  • Recognize symptoms and paraclinical signs of stable angina and chronic heart failure.
     

Pulmonary and infectious medicine

  • Recognize acute pulmonary disease.
  • Having a diagnostic approach in patients suspected of pneumonia, COPD, Asthma, or lungcancer.
     

Oncology

  • Recognize symptoms of the major cancer types and being able to start a basic diagnostic approach.
  • Recognize major complications to chemotherapy and acute oncological conditions.
  • Knowing when to contact an oncologist for specialized treatment.
     

Competencies

Cardiology

  • Initiate first line treatment for acute conditions.
     

Pulmonary and infectious medicine

  • Initiate frontline treatment for acute pulmonary disease.
     

Infectious medicine

  • Initiate treatment and diagnostics for pulmonary infections and endocarditis.
