Content

The anatomical part of the course includes histology. When completing the course, students shall be able to explain the structure and function of tissue, including descriptions of cell types and cellular structures by microscopy. Furthermore, the course comprises macroscopic as well as microscopic anatomy of the human including description of organs and embryology, describing the dynamic development of the body's structures as well as developmental defects.

Furthermore, it is the objective of the course to impart the student knowledge of important physiological concepts and interactions that will enable studies in the fields of pathophysiology and pharmacology at the master’s level.

Learning Outcome

After completing the course the student is expected to:

Knowledge

Know components and interactions within:

  • Gross anatomy of the human body including musculoskeletal system, the viscera and central nervous system based on organ preparations and fixed cadavers
  • The histology of specific organs and describe tissue types such as epithelial, muscle, nervous tissue connective tissue etc.                      
  • Embryology of the human body
  • The structures of the nervous system, neurones, glial cells, etc.
  • The concept of physiological homeostasis
  • Chemical messengers and intracellular signaling                      
  • The basis of membrane and action potentials
  • Synaptic transmission
  • Function of the periferal and autonomic nervous system
  • Senosory physiology
  • Skeletal muscle contraction and metabolism
  • Smooth and cardiac muscle contraction and its regulation
  • Control of body movement; motor center, descending pathways and local control
  • Design of the cardiovascular system
  • Cardiac function; hear beat coordination and mechanical events of the cardiac cycle
  • Vascular physiology of arteries, arterioles, cappilaries, venules and veins
  • Function of the lymphatic system
  • Regulation of systemic arterial pressure; baroreceptor reflexes and long-term regulation
  • Hemostasis
  • Ventilation and lung mechanics
  • Gas exchange in alveoli and tissues
  • Control of respiration
  • Digenstion and absorption
  • Gastrointestinal function; secretions and motility
  • Hormonal systems; the HPA axis
  • Hormonal systems; thyrodea, stress and growth
  • Control and interation of metabolism
  • Kidney physiology; basic concepts and renal clearance
  • Regulation of sodium and water balance
  • Regulation of acid/base and postassium balance
