SASB10131U Basic Animal Biology

Volume 2015/2016
Education

BSc Programme in Biology-Biotechnology - compulsory
BSc Programme in Science and IT

Content

In the course the lectures will cover the physiology of all of the major organ systems with focus on homeostasis, the cardiovascular systems, the nervous systems, endocrinology, immunology, growth and development and reproduction. The course will relate these physiological concepts and systems to animal life cycles, concentrating on the human and mouse. Responses and adaptations to environmental challenges will also be covered in the course.

Learning Outcome

The course will combine a broad coverage of animal biology with detailed description of those biological systems and processes that are most relevant to human and animal biotechnology.

After completing the course the students will be able to:

Knowledge:
- understand the basic mammalian life cycle.
- understand the concept of homeostasis.

Skills:
- work accurately with biological data.
- observe and interpret features in live animals.

Competences:
- explain adaptation to environmental variation.
- explain resistance to diseases.
- use biological knowledge to understand biotechnological achievements.
