HVKK03114U Visuel kultur/lit.vid/moderne kultur: Peirces semiotik - AFLYST
Visual Culture: Peirce's Semiotics - CANCELLED
This course gives a critical introduction to Peirce's
semiotics on the basis of his pragmatism. It is overall
chronologically oriented, beginning with Peirce's pragmatism
and logic of the 1860-1880s to give the background of the detailed
semiotics developed in the years after 1900. Here, a special
emphasis lies on the often-overlooked connection between semiotics,
logic, and cognition, giving propositions a central role.
Peirce's notion of propositions, however, is cross-modal,
involving not only linguistic elements but also pictures, diagrams,
gesture, etc. THIS GIVES OCCASION TO THE INVOLVEMENT OF ANALYTICAL
EXAMPLES.. DURING THE COURSE, CONTRASTS TO OTHER CURRENTS IN LOGIC,
SEMIOTICS, LITERARY THEORY ETC. WILL BE DISCUSSED.
Access to Peirce's Collected Papers (CP) will be provided; the
participants should acquire FS "Natural Propositions. The
Actuality of Peirce's Doctrine of Dicisigns" (Boston 2014:
Docent Press - £7.73 on Amazon)
The course plan will indicate reading for each class from the CP,
given, as is usual practice, by volume and paragraph numbers (NB
not page numbers). Relevant chapters of FS: Diagrammatology
(Springer 2007) will be provided.
Further reading will be added at the website during the course.
