AØKK08332U Seminar: Measuring health CANCELED

Volume 2015/2016
Education

MSc of Economics
The seminar is primary for students at the MSc of Economics

Content

Following the course will enable the student to understand:

  • the theoretical backgrounds for the various health measurements,

  • how health measurements are used

  • evaluation of health states

The various approaches to economic evaluation of health compare the benefits of a health intervention to its cost.

With regard to the benefits of the intervention, three alternative units of measurement can be distinguished, i.e. natural units on a one-dimensional scale; units of a cardinal utility function which maps the multi-dimensional concept of health into a scalar index; and units of money.

This course will focus on different one-dimensional scales, various scalar index measures (e.g. QALY and DALY), and different methods to evaluate health states primarily.

Learning Outcome
  • Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs)

  • Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs)

  • Healthy-Years Equivalents (HYEs)

  • Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy

  • Rating scale

  • Time Trade-Off

  • Standard Gamble

  • Applied use of QALY
