The seminar is primary for students at the MSc of Economics

Content

Following the course will enable the student to understand:

  • economic valuation of life and health

  • approaches o the economic valuation of health

  • the methodology and theoretical backgrounds of the various health analysis approaches,

  • how the different analysis approaches are used

 

The various approaches to economic evaluation of health compare the benefits of a health intervention to its cost. We shall focus on comparing health interventions with benefits measured in  a one-dimensional scale to status quo and to other interventions; and to compare health interventions with benefits (utility) measured in units of a cardinal utility function with status quo and th other interventions; and also to compare interventions, where benefit is measured in money units.

B.Sc. in Economics, BA scient san publ or similar with a basic introduction to either economic principles or health economy.
The seminar will be based on two lectures, one day with introduction to the subject, one day with discussions of topics, one day where students present their ideas to topics, a deadline for giving in the commitment paper, during the period of the writing process, then a round of presentations where it is compulsory for all students to participate as opponents.After presentation of their seminar papers the student has 14 days to hand in their final seminar paper for examination.

Commitment paper, presentations and final paper must be in English!

16-09-2015: Presentation of idea catalogue to thesis subjects
23-09-2015: Participants presentation of project titles and ideas. Discussions and feedback
30-09-2015: Deadline for handing in commitment paper. Writing process initiated.
07-10-2015: General introduction to economic valuation of life and health.
21-10-2015: Introduction to CBA, CEA and CUA.
28-10-2015: Presentation and critical evaluation of student (or student group) 1+2.
04-11-2015: Presentation and critical evaluation of student (or student group) 3+4
11-11-2015 Presentation and critical evaluation of student (or student group) 5+6
18-11-2015 Presentation and critical evaluation of student (or student group) 7+8

Oral examination, 45 min under invigilation
A written seminar paper and a 45 minuts oral presentation for the others participans at the seminar.

Attendance on the seminar. The mandatory commitment paper and seminar paper have been handed in at deadline.
