This course will cover the following topics:

Fertility:

  • Measures of fertility.

  • Parity determinants of fertility.

  • Economic/social determinants of fertility

Mortality:

  • Measures of mortality.

  • How to construct life tables.

  • Economic/social determinants of mortality.

Demographic Transitions:

  • Macro and microeconomic causes and consequences.

Migration:

  • Measures of migration.

  • Economic/social determinants and consequences of migration.

Learning Outcome

This course is an introductory course in demography. The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of the basic methods and concepts in demography. The course focuses on 1) the micro foundation of demography and 2) the interaction between demographic and economic changes in the process of economic development.

The overall goal is that students after having completed the course should be able to: 

  • Understand the basic methods of demography
  • Read and understand empirical analyses of demographic transitions
  • Understand the statistical methods underlying the demography measures
  • Make simple calculations/estimations of basic demographic measures of fertility, mortality, and migration.

Selected chapters in “Demographic methods” by Andrew Hinde, Arnold. 
The literature will additionally be based on various journal articles, focusing on the economic causes and consequences of long-run demographic changes in society.

Knowledge corresponding to the 1st and 2nd year on the BSc in Economics.
The course consists of 2 hours of classes (lectures) every week and 2x2 hours every second week for 14 weeks.

Related to the lectures, there will also be in-class presentations of journal articles by the students and various exercises, which should be prepared before class, are discussed.

Type of assessment
Written assignment, 4 weeks
The exam is an individual project. The students has to choose a topic within demography and find suitable data for their project. The outline of the project has to be approved by the lecturer. The dateline for this will be informed by the teacher.
Exam registration requirements

The student are required to present one journal article in class before they can sit the exam. The presentation has to been approved before the students can participate in the exam.

The project will be started in May and the essay has to be handed in before the 12th 22 of June at 23.59 2016

Re-exam

The re-exam is a new project with a projectdescription, which has to be approved by the teacher.

The projektassignment has to be handed in before august 21, 2016 at 23.59.

If only a few students have registered for the re-exam, the exam might change to an oral exam including the date for the exam, which will be informed  by the Examination Office.

Criteria for exam assesment

The student must in a satisfactory way demonstrate that he/she has mastered the learning outcome of the course.
