AANB11056U Anthropological Fieldwork & it’s many forms
The course is an exploration of the anthropological fieldwork and the many forms it can take. Students of anthropology are being introduced to the central role of fieldwork from early on in their studies, and they are being given experience with qualitative methods through smaller fieldworks on the 1st and 2nd year of their bachelor degree. The purpose of this course is to allow master (kandidat) students (who have completed their master fieldwork), and bachelor students (who have completed the fieldwork on their 2nd year) to exchange fieldwork experiences. Master students who have returned from fieldwork will make presentations based on their own experience. Many different kinds of fieldwork will be presented during the course and the participants will be made to reflect on the different kinds of possibilities and challenges involved in these different forms of fieldwork (e.g. fieldwork in different parts of the world, fieldwork as compared to internship, fieldwork in different kinds of fields (e.g. rural, urban, institutions, companies, etc.). The course is concluded with a one-day workshop where group exercises and role-play are used to make the participants reflect on themselves as fieldworkers.
By the end of the course the students should be able to:
- Identify and discuss central questions and dilemmas with regard to the anthropological fieldwork.
- Be acquainted with a broad range of different forms of fieldwork.
- Critically reflect on their experience as a fieldworker.
