SMOA09020U Laboratory Animal Science, Molecular Biomedicine

Volume 2014/2015
Education
MSc Programme in Molecular Biomedicine
Content

The course includes theory and practical exercises in the handling of laboratory animals and a range of interventions in sedated laboratory animals. The course is quality accredited by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA), and is based on the FELASA category C curriculum, according to the Council of Europe's resolution of December 3, 1993 and to Article 23.2a,b,d of Directive 2010/63/EU. The course has been accredited by the Danish Ministry of Justice according to their Order 88 of 31/01/2013, §56. Upon completion of the course and passed exam, the student is qualified to apply for an authorization to perform animal studies and can contribute to the planning and execution of animal studies.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course in Laboratory Animal Science, the student shall have acquired knowledge about the ethical aspects and legislation concerning animal studies, general laboratory animal science and about theoretical and practical conditions of importance to the planning, execution and assessment of animal studies.

To attain course attestation, the student shall be able to:

  • Account for the legislation on laboratory animals and animal studies
  • Provide a basic account of laboratory animal biology
  • Account for the importance of animals in biomedical research
  • Explain how research may be done while taking into account to the greatest extent possible the well-being of the laboratory animals
Lectures and practical exercises involving live animals.
Theoretical sessions are legislation and administration, laboratory animal housing and husbandry, ethics, anaesthesia and analgesia, health and hygiene, genetics and breeding, nutrition, environmental impact, experimental surgery, alternatives to animal experimentation, gnotobiology, laboratory animal biology, animal models and planning of animal experiments.
Practical exercises comprise legislation, application for license, ethics, handling, non-surgical and surgical procedures in laboratory rats and mice, laboratory animal behaviour, anaesthesia and analgesia.
