Content

Health systems are core social institutions with a vital role in reducing suffering and illness, and promoting health. This course introduces students to health systems in high-, middle-, and low-income societies in a historical, cultural, organizational, economical, and political context. Drawing on a number of different disciplines such as anthropology, economics, public health and history, the course will enable students to critically analyze and evaluate central aspects of health systems such as access to health care, priority setting, equity and discuss how health systems can respond to local and global changes.

Knowledge
On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Describe, explain, and discuss the overall global political, cultural, and economic factors influencing the organization of health systems in high- middle- and low income societies.
  • Identify and discuss the role of the different stakeholders at international, national, and local levels.
  • Describe and discuss the most common health financing models and their implications for the different groups of end-users and the overall quality of care.

 

Skills:
On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Work in an interdisciplinary setting
  • Apply relevant analytical approaches to selected aspects of health systems


Competencies:
On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate central (selected) aspects of health systems for prevention and disease control from an equity perspective
  • Develop and present substantiated analyses of selected aspects of health care systems based on case studies and/or critical reading of articles.

Written assignment
The student must hand-in a total of 4 portfolios at four specific(given) dates (one
portfolio at each of the dates) during the course in order to have two of the portfolios
assessed by the examiners. If the student does not hand in all four portfolios he/she
cannot participate in the exam.

The portfolios are individual assignments.

The length of each portfolio should max be 8.000 characters incl. spaces. The total
length of the four portfolios should be maximum 32.000 characters incl. spaces (excl.
title page and page of content, incl. notes and references).

The purpose of the portfolios is to ensure that students work in depth with the course
material during the course rather than at the end of the course only. The lecturer
(course responsible) does not see the portfolios before the final exam.

Criteria for exam assesment

 

If the student does not upload the portfolios, the student cannot obtain permission to participate in the exam (kursusattest)

To achieve the maximum grade of 12, the student must be able to demonstrate

Knowledge
- on the overall global political, cultural, and economic factors influencing the organization of health systems in high-middle- and low income societies
 on the role of different stakeholders at international, national and local levels
- on the most common health financing models and their implications for the different roups of end-users and the overall quality of care
Skills 
- related to the analysis of selected aspects of health care systems in a global context
