The course focuses on a cross disciplinary introduction to the problems concerning climate changes and the consequences for living conditions of human beings following them. Furthermore, the interaction between the physical and economic conditions currently being influenced by changes in the global climate as well as the mechanisms which have been applied to limit climate chances and their consequences.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

Status of the research in climate changes, models for projection of climate development and the content of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, physical and economic consequences of climate changes, the influence of climate changes in atmospheric, terrestrial and marine systems, model deviations, feedback mechanisms, tools for the limitation of the discharge of greenhouse gasses including the Kyoto protocol and clean development mechanisms and the UN climate panel.

Skills:
 

  • account for changes in climate in recent times
  • account for the relations between the climate and the content of green house gasses in the atmosphere
  • structure a written assignment displaying the understanding of the scientific background for a climate related problem
  • discuss the environmental and physical consequences expected to follow a change in climate
  • integrate knowledge from scientific literature and data in assessments of climate related issues

The form of teaching and work will be class teaching with active participation of students by means of student presentations and group-work.

Written assignment
Oral examination, 20 minutes
The written assignment is prepared during the course and must be handed in prior to the exam week. The oral exam uses the written assignment as its point of departure. It includes the titles listed in the officially approved reading list.
