Content

Cities and city regions are fundamental places in modern societies. They are essential places of living and vital places for innovation and creativity. City regions have become more complex with an increasingly multiplicity of urban forms together with a more diffuse urban structure as large parts of the countryside is being integrated in the urban fabric. This has produced new social and economic spaces of relations and flows within and between cities and city-regions. The course studies contemporary social and economic changes of city-regions. Cities and city regions are examined as new frameworks for production, living and strategic urban planning. Focus is on urban restructuring, the rise of the post-industrial knowledge based economy and the new economic, political and social geographies, the new divisions of labour and social classes.
