NGEA09041U Applied Mathematical and Numerical Modelling

Volume 2014/2015
Education
MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
Content

The course is based on hands-on exercises mostly taken from hydrology and hydrogeology. Thus, it tries to de-mystify the mathematical equations used to express physical and chemical processes used in these disciplines. Students learn to program their own models and apply these to solve real-world problems.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:
Functions, differentiation/integration, linear algebra, ordinary and partial differential equations, finite differences as they appear in geoscience. Learning how to program and develop scripts/solutions/models.

Skills:
Translate geoscience problems into “mathematical problems”, find appropriate mathematical or numerical solution procedures for solving the problem, and develop programs/scripts that can solve real-world geoscience problems. Currently, Matlab is used and learning how to structure a script is part of the course. Write reports, where the mathematical/numerical methods are presented, tested/verified, and used to solve geoscience problems.

Competences:
Perform quantitative analysis of geoscience problems.
