Contemporary American Politics: Washington and Nation in 2015 will focus on American politics, society, and culture in 2015. It will give an in-depth survey to the workings of the American political system and how the system interacts with American culture outside of the Washington D.C. Beltway. While this course surveys American politics since 2001, the major emphasis will be on the Obama presidency. The election of 2012, the congressional elections held in November 2014, and the recent legislative impasse will provide background for the course. Discussions will take their point of departure from articles selected from the New York Times, Foreign Policy, New Republic, Wall Street Journal, Economist, Financial Times; Washington Post, New Standard, American Conservative, The Atlantic, Mother Jones, and other respected sources. By the end of the course you will have a good overview of the political system and electoral dynamics in 2015and the issues which preoccupy the nation.
