HENA03929U English - Free topic 9: 19th Century American Writers in the Digital World (Exam form C)
Volume 2014/2015
Content
Major digital archive projects have, in the past few years, made literary manuscripts, correspondences, and ephemera internationally accessible as never before. In this class, we will study major nineteenth-century American authors including Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Mark Twain through both print editions and the curated online exhibits and archives of their work. In the process, we will consider the value of archival work to literary study, interrogating the ways that archives are and have been formed, and considering the benefits and challenges that they offer us as students of literature.
