HENA03884U English - Free topic: Meaning in Language: An Introduction to Semantics
Volume 2014/2015
Content
This course is an introduction to semantics, the linguistic discipline that deals with meaning. Although meaning is the central feature of language, it is only in the last forty years that it has begun to be systematically studied as part of language, because it was previously assumed that meaning was not really a linguistic phenomenon. The course will cover the basic issues associated with meaning in relation to grammar, philosophy, interaction, and cognition, and give an overview of the different kinds of meaning that languages draw on.
Literature
The textbook will be John Saeed: Semantics (Wiley), and there will be a class compendium of supplementary texts.
