 The number of speakers for whom English is a second or foreign language now vastly exceeds the number of native speakers of English. This challenges the role of native speakers, in particular of standard British and American varieties – as the arbiters of correct and normal use, or as the “owners” of English. In this course we will discuss the linguistic features of selected World Englishes and of English as a Lingua Franca and critically examine the discourses surrounding these. We will also discuss how these changing norms of English may affect the status of English and the role of teachers of English as a foreign language in Denmark.
