HANK03141U MACA Strategies for Cultural Analysis
Based on a student group project addressing sensuous aspects of cultural analysis this graduate course takes contemporary theories of culture and society into a number of applied fields. We will look at different modes of generating ethnography and doing cultural analysis that are applicable within fields such as transportation, urban design and planning, shopping, immigration politics, tourism, technology, exhibition work, development work. This term the shared project concentrate on the theme: ‘sensuous spaces in cultural analysis’.
The course will focus on the ways in which senses, performativity and creativity can work as both objects of study and analytical tools for cultural analysts. The emphasis is on what happens when different theories of and analytical approaches to culture and society are applied in specific fields of interest. What are the analytical implications of approaching a space, a technology, a piece of art, or other, through the concepts of the sensuous, performed and improvised, and how do we study such fluid objects in cultural analysis?
