NSCPHD1236 Vascular function and angiogenesis in health and lifestyle related disease

Volume 2013/2014
Content

The purpose of the PhD course is to present and discuss the most recent research in the area of basal regulation of blood flow and angiogenesis in skeletal muscle and the role of lifestyle related disease and physical training.

The course will cover:

  • Anatomy and function of the microcirculation
  • Control of blood flow and vascular function in skeletal muscle
  • Regulation of angiogenesis in skeletal muscle
  • The effect of lifestyle related disease and aging on angiogenesis and vascular function
  • The effect of physical training on angiogenesis and vascular function.

The course is offered by the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) and is part of the research programme "Physical activity and nutrition for improvement of health" funded by the UCPH Excellence Programme for Interdisciplinary Research. Financial support for the course has been provided by the faculty of SCIENCE at UCPH.

The course will be a combination of lectures, discussions and practical hands-on and demonstration experiments, data treatment and data presentation. In addition, the participants will present their own PhD projects.

Several national and three international experts will participate in lectures, discussions and experiments:
•Professor Chris Ellis, The Department of Medical Biophysics, University of Western Ontario, Canada
•Professor Stuart Egginton, School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Leeds, Great Britain
•Professor Dick Thijssen, Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Science, John Moores University, Liverpool, Great Britain

The national lecturers are mainly from the unit of Integrative Physiology at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, University of Copenhagen.
